Today I did the training session I had planned to do Sunday, but couldn't manage due to the general exhaustion caused by my run and over 2 hours of dancing like a mad woman on my birthday night out.It was peeing down with rain, so I got myself down to my work gym at lunchtime for a brick session (which means doing 2 or more disciplines in the same workout).I did a bit of research and for your first brick session you shouldn't overdo it, so I reduced the distance I planned to run to only 2 km; just so I'd get a feel without injuring myself or experiencing an embarrassing treadmill incident.
Buuut it all went wrong when I got to the gym...
I started to get a little suspicious when it took me almost 40mins to cycle the 10km (hmmm). Then I got on the treadmill, set the speed to 7.0 just to get started nice and easily. And almost died. I spent the first third of the run racing along thinking 'oh my goodness it is really hard to run after a bike'. Then I dropped it down to 6.1 so I could do a nice, very easy run for a bit (my comfy snail-pace that's barely above a walk). Except I was still running pretty fast. Then the penny drops... it's mph! Haha! So turns out the machines at the gym are set to miles, not kilometers.... aaand I'd just cycled 10 miles and run almost 2 miles.
Afterwards I hid in the changing rooms for over 15 minutes, answering mails on my phone and waiting for my face to get less rosy. It didn't. So I had to do the walk of shame to my desk with a face that was so gloriously red that I left a Mexican wave of amused snorts and giggles behind me. How do I get into these situations?
On the plus side my brain is obviously my main obstacle... because I knocked out some pretty sweet times.
The Bike - Distance: 16 km
- Time: 38 min
- Av Speed: 25 km/hr or 2.4 min/mile
- Distance: 3.2 km
- Time: 20 min
- Av Pace: 6.2 min/km or 9.7 km/hr
I'm almost on a 10 min mile now! Yays!
